Alcoholism – Is Nutrition The Solution?

Alcoholism is a biochemical disorder affecting almost 20 million people in the United States. The accepted therapy for an alcoholic is to offer psychological rather than nutritional treatment because it is seen as a mental disorder. But since the death rate among recovered alcoholics is almost as high as it is among those who continue to drink, obviously new methods are needed to address the physical damage from this disease.

Tragically, one in four deaths among even abstinent alcoholics is a suicide. This is not a surprise since severe depression is common in alcoholism. A number of brain chemicals known to prevent depression are depleted by heavy drinking.

A study done in the late 50′s by Nobel Laureate Roger Williams PhD found that when rats were given a choice between a solution of 10% alcohol in water or just plain water, 10% of the rats became alcoholics. If the micronutrient levels in the food such as calcium, magnesium, and the B Vitamins were reduced, nearly all the rats became alcoholic. But, boosting the nutrients to mega doses caused all the rats to stop drinking. Read the rest of this entry »
